I am looking for ideas for an adventure whereby characters meet each other for the first time before. I would give PCs the opportunity to develop a backrground on how it is that they have come to a particular town but am looking for inspiration on how the PCsmay meet each for the first time and be bound together in a campaign. Any thoughts?

http://www.dangermouse.net/gurps/reject/tavern.html has a lot of good ideas. I've plundered it a few times.

In my most recent Dragon Warriors campaign, I told the players their characters all had to be childhood friends (as they were 15 or 16 when the campaign started, this was the recent past/present still) and left it up to them to work out exactly how they connected. That game is set in my version of Ongus, so most of them had met through their schooling. Not everybody had to know everybody, but everybody had to know at least three of the others, and they all had a particular tavern they spent their evenings in. Then I started the campaign with one of the characters celebrating his birthday - and during the night his parents were murdered.

I like the background system in the Beyond the Wall rpg, wherein the players via background suggestions flesh out their background, native village, friends & foes, etc. That way, when the characters are finished they not only know each other, but a lot of places and other persons so you as a GM has a lot of background material to use!

In various Fate-based books, there is the idea of story phases when creating characters, where for the 3 phases, the character gets an aspect from that phase. Now there's no need to aspects in DW, but the process goes like this:

Background phase: origin story, background, etc
Story/cameo phase: story involving the PC to your left at the gaming table
Story/cameo phase 2: story involving the PC to your right at the gaming table

So this creates links and shared backgrounds between everyone, though not necessarily all the same stories.

In my last Dragon Warriors campaign, the PCs were all criminals on the run from another kingdom - they had been involved in a coup to overthrow an evil Duke and, whilst successful, had been forced into exile. The coup was a grand and torrid affair and whilst the PCs didn't really know each other during the coup, they came together during their flight from the fallout. Finding themselves alone in a foreign kingdom, they banded together initially for moral support while they explored the new place, but then bonded during the adventures that ensued.

It was only a playtest campaign to smooth out the rough edges to some of my house rules, so it wasn't a long campaign (or particularly involved in terms of story arcs, etc.), but it was a nice premise to bring a bunch of mis-fit professions together.

Hm, couple of people meet in a pub and suddenly get to know one another.

I remember my games used to start out, you're a group and you're in a forest....

A Chinese classic, romance of the three kingdoms has 3 great guys meeting where one looks at an enlistment poster, 2nd guy shows up, and whilst drinking they see a distinct 3rd person who wants to conscript.

Must be plenty of ideas but I'm on the solvents....

That video highlights why I use the stat+d6 mechanic to make ability checks, rather than the d20<=stat mechanic, in my own games.

I've had PCs be siblings, ex-army mates, a noble household, a barons court, a coven and a few others.
