Thank all for the detailed explanations! Is a "core" ability considered something a profession gets at rank 1, and a "special" ability something that comes at later ranks?

Sorry, I meant to be clear on that and forgot to go back and clarify. In this case, a 'special ability' is whatever is described that way in the core rulebook - if you look at the core book, you'll see each profession has a section called: 'Special abilities of a....' which comes after the initial description. I'd call 'core abilities' the standard ATTACK, DEFENCE, etc, abilities, and anything that comes before that Special Abilities' section in each profession descriptor.

It's not a perfect approach - Spellcasting is described as a 'Special Ability' for an Elementalist where I would call it a core ability - but in general that makes the distinction.

So any comments on the actual balance or suggested changes specifically for the Saltwater Sailor? Not that the more generalised discussion that comes up because it is the first path hasn't been helpful - some things about basic functionality obviously needs to be made clearer in a Version 2.0 if not actually changed - but before I move onto the next path (I am hoping to get feedback on all of them), I thought I'd ask if there are any specific comments on this one. No harm in coming back to it later too, of course, either.
