I didn't want to clutter up the 'Last Campaign you/are running' thread so I started a new one in case anyone is interested in what my players have been up to recently.

We have new players! Two friends expressed an interest in joining the group so they jointly played Edrik the Assassin during A Box of Old Bones as his regular player was away. They enjoyed it so much they've signed up full (-ish) time. The party has been joined by Sir Rowan Lionheart, a knight errant who seeks adventure and rights wrongs (he says). The second new player has offered to sit in for anyone who is absent; this is likely to happen a lot as exams get closer.

In our last couple of sessions the group finally delivered Maxim Le Cloche to Baron Aldred’s court; where they explained his crimes and eventually produced a letter from Sir Olvar as supporting evidence (mad scramble to see if anyone had remembered to write it down!). They also saw a few characters that will be important later: Almeric, Grisso, Beorn, Alcuin, and Fraser.

They visited a local tavern, met Sir Rowan, and were approached by a dubious looking peddler (Marcus Dorsteny) who tried to sell them all sorts of crap before producing a genuine healing potion. Little gold crowns popped up in everybody’s eyes as they pumped him for information about its source, hoping to cut him out in future. He claimed to have acquired it from an alchemist in Clyster, and for one awful moment I had visions of them packing up and heading there straight away.

After a bit of haggling Marcus agreed to a wager on a horse race taking place that afternoon; if their horse won he would accept their offer but if his horse won they would pay his asking price. They then set up as bookmakers (!) and started soliciting bets from the locals, including Almeric. I let them get away with this once; next time they’ll be having earnest discussions with large, unfriendly men about the virtues of not stealing someone else’s business. Their horse lost; they made some money back on their customers’ lost stakes but had to cough up for the healing potion.

In Karickbridge they met Edira, a woman whose farm kept being attacked by a mysterious black rider. Off they went to find The Tower of Horglin. Sir Rowan, keen to prove himself, was almost killed by the Grey Knight at the bridge; a couple of the other players realised that it was immune to non-magical weapons but it didn’t occur to them to their comrade a magical one. Eventually they escaped and found a safer place to ford the river.

In the forest, Edrik scouted out the cave inhabited by the ‘hermit’. He reported back to the rest of the party and they all piled into the cave, waking the old man. They suspected that the bones littering the cave might be human, but they weren’t sure. He showed them the tunnel to Horglin’s tower, but they didn’t trust him and returned to the upper path. They encountered half a dozen drunken centaurs who invited them to join the revels. Initially jovial and curious (“How do you manlings cope with only two legs? And such weedy little legs at that.”); they turned nasty when pressed for details about 'she who speaks'.

The party beat a hasty retreat and were then ambushed by a group of Goblins (or 'vermin' as Sir Garen calls them), who threw acorns and pine cones at them. Sir Rowan caught a pine cone, threw it back, and hit one of the Goblins on the nose! They hurried on and arrived at Horglin’s tower. I’d altered it to a more traditional set up, and they spent a tense time creeping up the tower in search of Horglin himself. Sir Garen picked up quite quickly that a demon summoning had gone catastrophically wrong; sure enough they found Horglin dead, all his magical items turned to dust. They also found his tattered journal in his study and then legged it, forgetting to search the rest of the tower.

Finding two large, goat shaped hoof-prints in the mud outside they fled the forest as rapidly as they could, afraid that there might still be a demon flying about somewhere. They avoided the Grey Knight’s and arrived at Edira’s farm as night was falling. They now know that she knows more than she’s telling and they want answers to a few pointed questions about what’s really going on . . .
