Plus I like the whole classless thing.

If you'd be up for sharing how your group (presumably kids?) fared with creating, and then identifying with, their character, I'd appreciate the insight (I've never played with kids and always assumed classes are more accessible to novice RPG-ers than classless systems).

I think it's well within the scope of the original question. We play with my kids (born September 2001), my wife and a neighbour, all of whom were RPG virgins. The campaign started in 2008/9 when the kids were 7. IIRC only the neighbour created his own character, I rolled up the others, originally as DW characters and then ported to SW a couple of years later. The skill-based system means that they've all since taken 'ownership' of what I originally created through choosing what skills to advance in. There's more ownership of the character this way than if they'd carried on with DW characters since the skill progression there is pretty rigid until you get to the skills of the mighty (unless you're an assassin). We're still in that in-between zone between role playing and roll playing, but they grow each year.

Hm... imagine rolling up your characters, and then deciding which profession to go over 6 underwurlde adventures. Book 1 talks about how hotbloods can become 1st rank warriors. Wonder if we can expand on that without departing too much from what rules already exist.

There was that encounter in Bloodsword 1, the two bridges where you can lose all your gear and fight a sprog. Except for the trickster, if I recall correctly the Kurland guy materialized on both sides. No such thing as a sprog trickster profession.....

I haven't read a system where you start off without a specialty, but I think I heard later versions of Dn'D had some elements of that... not that I'd know, only read up to 2nd edition.
