Hi everyone. Looking for a bit of game inspiration here. My players went ahead and used a fragile sword that was supposed to be central to the plot, now it's broken. I'm sending them to Wayland the Smith (THE Wayland! ) to repair it, but I'm not sure what price he should demand. Certainly more than the standard sixpence for shodding a horse, but has anyone got any cool Legend ideas? I'm using "Freeze Thy Blood Less Coldly" as the skeleton for the scenario.
Not only that, but the sword has the spirit of an angel trapped within, who has gone mad after 500 years trapped in the temple in Glissom. Any Legend-compatible ideas how to restore her sanitary? At the moment she's constantly wailing and weeping and is only barely aware of what's going on around her. She volunteered to be trapped in the sword (or more accurately in a separate orb which serves as the sword's pommel) in order to destroy The Great Evil (book of demon summoning). The plan went wrong and both book and sword have remained hidden for 500 years. The book was recently recovered by a darkness elementalist turned demonologist and the adventurers have been able to track down the orb and sword.
Thanks in advance.

Actually, one idea comes to mind for Wayland's price; a swan's feather. My players know the legend.

Hi,

I read a couple of days ago a topic " sell a sword +1 or +3" on drag wars group. A lot of arguments , there , :).

But i found an understandable idea found on the base of the ransom (after a tournament) . I could copy and paste if i find it.

An idea of how much cost a +3 Sword, could give a base of a price to fix it.

It can give you an idea for your unique item.

But I think, your idea is better. and keep a low fantasy atmosphere ( less money for magic items and more ideas of adventure)

Hi, Hermes. Are you remembering this, which I posted back in 2012?

Quote:
"The Marshall will assess any form for magical armour or weaponry at 2,000-24,000 florins above its base (unenchanted) value. This is because an experienced warrior can tell quite quickly if a suit of armour or a sword-blade is enchanted, but he cannot easily determine how enchanted."

So, there you go - the cost of a magical sword is 30 + (2d12x1000) florins. If there's enough of them going around, traders probably settle on around 15,000 florins as an agreed selling rate (that is, slightly more than half the standard value), and something much smaller as an agreed buying rate - maybe around 5,000 florins, which is the cost of two warhorses or a large townhouse.

Personally, I reckon the price should be something that money can't buy - it's a sword with an angel trapped in it, after all. :) And since the angel is trapped because they made a commitment to the greater good that proved to come with a personal great cost, I think the price should involve one of the characters having to make a commitment to the greater good that will impose a great personal cost down the track.

Hope this helps,

Gary Johnson

Just thoughts. How was it broken? Surely it must've been a tragedy, like buried in the heart of an innocent or child. If so then you'll need more than a smithy. Maybe drench it in the tears of a unicorn, but thats a very, very upset unicorn. A smithy who has achieved adepthood, hard to find one of those... or maybe you can find a Shen Lung and help him achieve enlightenmight by figuring out a certain riddle where the answer was bloody obvious and could've been answered by a young child.

As for materials, stuff associated with pureness and innocence, like the beard of a nun... thinking out loud... just kidding... The hair from a looks 18 maiden with her virtue intact, more easier slaying dragons...

Not just any smith. Some legendary smith, who would arise from the dead only for a worthy cause, and maybe the sword will smash like glass if wielded against innocents again...

Just thoughts...

Actually it was physically broken by the PCs when wounding a frost dragon, but that's beside the point. The reason for the angel's madness is quite distinct; she'd volunteered to be trapped in the orb so that the sword would be effective in destroying the Demonicon. Having made her peace with her fate, she found herself captured by enemy forces and interred in an evil temple. The culmination of all of these events have driven her mad.
Incidentally, the Demonicon was captured by the church at the same time and locked away in an obscure Erewornian monastery where the monks joining the order had their tongues removed so that they couldn't be tempted to read from the book under any circumstances.

No, I am not remembering ).
But the amounts you mentioned are understandable , and could be an idea (I a m just surprised we count 30 florin in such an amont, )

I totally agree with you on a price which is not some money, )

Have a good day

Hm, reread your post... ok, so you need a smithy, and maybe.. that Smithy can use some materials. Perhaps the joyful laughter of some child would work. Really, I think for Angels 500 years is not a problem, they're immortal so time would pass by quickly, bit like the perception of elves.

Hm... still, perhaps her sorrow can be countered by anger, by exposing the sword to atrocities, witnessing the deaths of innocents, lent to some evil orc warlord and witnessing atrocities during the course of a war which would serve to increase the destructive power of the sword as the Angel rages, something like, +5...

Until it is raised against a child, and then it will pacify and turn against the wielder.... I suppose no high level orc warlord would bother using it on civilians.

Can the players do without the sword for a while?....

Okay then - I'm glad you mentioned Waylen. I was looking for one of the old Robin of Sherwood gamebooks, that had an encounter with him - I think the one where Robin mugged a knight for a sword that turned out to be rather nasty. Didn't find it but I think he was living in a place that wasn't quite the real world.

The way I see this, enter Fairie to speak with Waylen who gives them a list of things he needs - either items to fix the sword or things he needs to be bribed with in order to fix said sword. Feathers, horns, tears, etc. And give them a brief encounter while leaving with some bad ass elves who are strange...

Then, when things are done, they have to enter the realm the lady is stuck in and 'free' her. It's a gothic, misty place with a ruined city that resembles Glissom. They can find her in a cathedral in the centre. And then do whatever seems appropriate to 'free' her - slay a ghost, escort her out past other ghosts, do another fetch quest or slay some fiend that made her mad.

And in the end, they get a nice, cleansed sword with nice enchantments. And a history. That can mess up the book.

YMMV, but make an adventure of it. And good luck.
