In the blood sword books there seemed to be a number of key events, like the coming of the Magi, the retrieval of Yggdrasil or that branch of it... there are references to Vallandar coming back. I really think there is a build up to some major global event where multiple events all lead to destruction. Also note in book 6 it actually defines the current year, if I recall correctly. The present year is 993.

Have you used this element in your games? Is there some major regional or global event happening on that date, or is it as insignificant as the y2k fears? Maybe Balor walks Ellesland and leads an army from the North to lay waste to the island?

I have to say that I'm not a fan of world-shattering quests in DW. I think it's fine for games like Pathfinder\D&D, which lend themselves to the epic quest rather well. DW, however, just isn't high-fantasy enough for that style of gaming for me. Or maybe I'm just not doing it right...

And as for Blood Sword, it might be set in Legend, but I don't really consider it canon <was that a sharp intake of breath I heard...?> .

As for Vallandar, I put a reason for him not having risen again in my edit of the King Under the Forest adventure, available here (scroll to the bottom - I've not organised this page yet...):

I just had another thought - if your campaign is set in Ellesland, you could certainly start using epic events in Krarth and Yggdras in the background. The truth might be something very mundane like a small meteor strike, earthquake or something, but by the time the superstitious rumour mill has brought news to Ellesland, it will be filled with tales of epic battles between gods, giants roaming the Earth, devils escaping from fissures in the ground, and much more besides. And all of it, probably, as punishment for those foreigners' strange ways... Suddenly, those pesky mendicant adventurers that usually bring nothing but trouble are sought out to spin tales of their travels and share what they have heard about the great events unfolding overseas.

Quick-thinking adventurers of dubious moral rectitude might even insert themselves into some of the stories they weave to give their reputations a little nudge, maybe even duping the occasional merchant into parting with too much silver for an uninspiring trinket they convince him played a pivotal role in one of the stories. Not that true noble paragons of virtue and honour would ever stoop to such things, but not every dragon warrior is altruistic...

Yeah, it would be hard to coordinate. Bloodsword could do it but if the whole lands of Legend was all talking about the big thing, it sort of distracts from the usual sewer sanitation orc exterminating jobs....

But I suppose the year 1000 would be a big event to be celebrated by all sorts of crazed peasants and all.

Maybe its better to select a new date, or just omit using the Calendar altogether.

Wonder how GM's handle the idea of fortune tellers. Perhaps, unlike the real world they're more effective?... Is there any reason why the dead should know more about the future for a Sorceror to do an ORACLE?

Sewers in DW? I always pictured the dark ages as a little less sanitary... But then the Romans had sewers, so I guess it's possible some of the more continental cities might have them.

I've been tinkering with a new Mystic ability, prophesy, but I've yet to be satisfied with it. As for a sorcerer's Oracle spell, it won't reveal anything about the future, only past events (and even then is quite limited). If a sorcerer wanted to research a spell that enabled them to see (however murkily) the future, I'd probably make it at least level 8. I occasionally drop an NPC with some foresight to keep adventurers on the right track, but I've never succeeding in doing this elegantly or subtley. In my experience, too much can go wrong when you create too many (or detailed) fixed points in your campaign's future timeline, or maybe I just have a bunch of contrary players  !

I remember one incident where a GM implemented it. I suppose 'God' can make anything happen. So I saw a vision of my adn'd thief falling off a cliff...

Well, those Selentine had everything. I think I read somewhere they also had some form of central heating. Not hard, I've visited some bath houses, not in Ellesland, but I know what excellent sappers those Selentine had.... Roads, bridges, aqueducts.... If it werent' for those sappers, I don't think the Selentine would've stood a chance at ... Alesia... or the DW equivalent....

Really, when I saw a tv documentary about it I thought it was crazy, building some fortifications to keep the Chaubretians in and to keep a second force out...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Alesia

The Siege of Alesia is considered one of Caesar's greatest military achievements and a classic example of siege warfare and investment. The battle of Alesia can safely be described as marking the end of Celtic dominance in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Northern Italy.

Obviously Caesar was a great sapper.....

I can't believe the Sapper profession didn't quite make it into the Players' Book :o !

I can confirm that Ongus has sewers - originally built during the period of the Selentine Empire. It can probably safely be assumed that other major cities that the Selentines were involved in have them as well.

Unfortunate but I've only done up to version 0.39 if I recall correctly. WIthout terrain rules, they don't amount to much. Need to revise archery rules for one thing to take into account cover, which would be a variation of 'small target'. Also an obscured target, by vegetation or whatnot which would be like 'low light conditions'. Also firing from a moving platform would be another, independent 'target moving ...' variation.

Terrain, needs going over... Just as in Alesia, they had a weak spot where they couldn't throw up defensive structures, theres only so much you can do without sufficient time...
