Once in the pentacle, you can still act, but are powerless to leave the pentacle. Whilst the spell description is not clear on this point, I would argue that anyone trapped within is unable to affect anyone outside the pentacle. As it can affect 2d6 people, you could easily find the whole party trapped in the pentacle...

Text says that it will only entrap the first two characters, so I guess he got unlucky and rolled a 2! That might give the others a chance...

Don't forget the comment about Rimfax in the text - that might be a powerful motivator to stay and fight. However, I prefer to ignore that advice and create a recurring villain to harry the characters throughout their adventuring career. Darian will have a lot on his hands just avoiding the wrath of Rimfax (which the PCs may be able to use to help them finally defeat him when they've had enough of his interventions), so he won't crop up often, but he's unlikely to forget the role they played in his downfall.

We'll see how it plays out. If he doesn't die then the PC with the Sword of Damacles hanging over then might get a sore neck... He would make a great recurring villain though. Off to stay with Lord Valdyne's vamps.

5. Can the doppelganger talk?

The spell description would have you believe not - the doppelganger has no knowledge skills (presumably that includes language), reason (so would not know how to respond in a conversation) or volition (so even if it could speak, it would not choose to). The doppelganger will, however, obey its creator's commands, so if the creator ordered the doppelganger to deliver a verbal message, because it is a physical copy of the caster and, presumably, therefore has the capability to speak, it could then talk. But for the reasons above, I would not expect the doppelganger to be able to hold its own in a conversation.

Interesting, the text says that Darian lurks "in the northeast tower, communicating only through his doppelganger." That implies some capacity to speak, but you are right, it probable only relays messages or repeats speeches it is told to.

I like the idea of a narrative encounter, but don't deprive the characters of a chance to be involved in the dramatic denoeument, as they may feel cheated if they're not involved in Darian's final downfall. Consider giving the spear the power to deflect some of Darian's spells (or at least reduce the damage) to give the wielder a chance to get close to Darian to strike the killing blow. Maybe the wielder of the spear is immune to the pentacle of entrapment, etc. - that kinda thing that gives the character a 'reward' for having the spear, but still keeps them involved in the exciting finale!

That is a great idea Lee! I'll probably make it give the holder a spell shield, or let it blast away the pentacle, or a bonus to magical defence against the duke. I can't find much in the way of spells that protect against indirect attack spells though.

How do you block up a garderobe?

A toilet? Just ensure a concentration of flammable gases... A few dead wadwos, some other stuff you killed, chuck em' in the pile, process them if necessary for easier digestion, increase ambient heat to encourage the growth of anaerobic bacteria.... when the place is knocking people out with high concentrations of gases, you choose a time and send in a fire arrow, maybe from an archer...

BADABOOOOOOMMMM!!!!

OK, so here is how it went down.

The party is:
Aldo of the Brilliantly Coloured Robe, 3rd rank sorceror
Nameless X, 3rd rank assassin
Sir Grimble Bobbleberry, 3rd rank Knight
Zagro the Warlock, 3rd rank Warlock

The party was already a little damaged from pervious encounters, and had used up almost all their magic points and healing potions.

After dispatching the doppelganger, the party noticed that the Sword of Damacles over Aldo's head was still there. They quickly located the ladder above the fireplace and Nameless X ascended stealthily, followed by Sir Grimble Bobbleberry, Zagro and then Aldo.

When Nameless X reached the top of the ladder he looked into the room. Darian was sitting on the end of his bed, staring into his speculum and hadn't noticed Nameless X. Too late, he also saw the pentacle on the floor and was instantly transported inside it. Due to Nameless X's stealthy approach, Darian still hadn't noticed him. Deciding that the time for stealth had passed, Nameless X yelled out "The Duke must die!" and launched himself at Darian, only to discover his entrapment within the pentacle. Darian chucked, surprised to discover someone in his pentacle but unable to see anyone else around. He decided to summon a Battlemaster in case there was anybody else around.

Hearing Nameless X's cry, Sir Grimble Bobbleberry climbed into the room, followed closely by Zagro and Aldo. Bobbleberry saw the pentacle and got trapped by it but Zagro was not and so ran to engage the Battlemaster. The Battlemaster struck Zagro a blow, which was deflected by Zagro's mail. Zagro threw down a vial of dust of transformation and took the form of a sabre-tooth tiger. Aldo busied himself rubbing off one of the painted lines of the pentacle.

Now that there were more adversaries, Darian prepared a deathlight spell which streaked towards Zagro and Aldo. Aldo evaded but Zagro did not - he reverted back to human form, now dead with a massive burnt black wound in his side. With the pentacle now broken Nameless X leapt at Darian, but his sword went wide. Bobbleberry attacked the Battlemaster but missed. The battlemaster dealt him a nasty blow in return. Seeing Darian preparing another spell, Aldo threw the Spear of Ereworn, which struck true. Darian collapsed. The battlemaster turned and looked at Darian, then disappeared.

Given the comment about Rimfax not wanting his servants to flee, I decided Darian would have more fear of Rimfax's eternal damnation than a quick death from a sword. So no running away. Maybe I went easy on them as they managed to avoid TPK with 3 rounds of combat. It was late and I was a bit tired. Darian probably should have tried a transfix instead of deathlight but hey, it went ok. One dead but three survived.

I liked the account, and interesting that you had two professions in the party that hadn't been conceived when Elven Crystals was written. The abilities of warlocks and assassins can really influence the outcomes of those early adventures (just consider the impact of stealth, let alone all the tactical advantages the first three levels of warlock spells offer).
