In the waning days of the Selentine Empire, an order of imperial paladins arose to fight back the barbarian hordes. These special legions fought using both arms, and a unique arcane lore. Though ultimately vanquished, the tradition of martial training and arcane spellcasting lived on amongst a few noble families of the Selentine lands. There the special spells are passed on from father to son (and occasionally daughter) and jealously kept from outsiders. These few are the Warlocks. Proudly elitist relics of a bygone age, they often conceal their skills from jealous outsiders, but at the same time their deeds of renown in the defense of the realm are still occasionally needed. The land of the crusades have become a base for their operations, and there they have after a lapse of several hundred years once more come together as a formal organisation, small but growing in power.

I really like the tone - the tragic defeat of the legions, and the pride and jealousy that keeps this noble profession from flourishing and staving off its own extinction. That sounds pretty Dragon Warriorsy to me!

Thanks for sharing.

What if we considered it some kind of ... witch hunter profession? Can we presume that Tobias de Vantery was a warlock?

I think anyone could take the role of witch-hunter - rather than make it an adventuring profession, I'd let it be something any adventurer could do. Assuming, of course, they had the sanction of the church to do it.

I'm not sure how the Players' Book is going to approach organisations, but I like the idea that adventures can apprentice with an organisation (like a militant witch-hunting arm of the church, for example) for 6 months or more, but once they've been fully-initiated, gain some sort of bonus. In the example of a witch hunter, maybe the church approaches likely knights and, during a 2-year apprenticeship, learn many new tricks to defend themselves against the influences of the Otherworld, gaining a +2 Magic Defence. The character is 2 years older, has a new code to follow, but now adventures with a purpose and a small bonus to help him.

Unless they're self-appointed lunatics like Matthew Hopkins who had no sanction from anybody.

Cheers

Some of these posts occasionally make me wonder if there are a few early drafts of the PB out in the wild already......

I wish!

Maybe I just made a lucky guess...? Only time will tell, but hopefully not another 4 years or so!

I'm calling it now: 128 page Archer sourcebook.

Just what we need! An adventuring profession whose function is centered around a piece of hardware! Just as knights are nothing without their plate armour and barbarians are nothing without a two handed something...
