By request, here are some fairly in-depth rules for disease that I knocked up a few years ago.
These are all real-world diseases that would have been present in a medieval society.

In these rules the chance of randomly contracting one of the more deadly diseases is pretty low - however, if it does happen, it could form the basis of an adventure to cure the afflicted party member.

Something I seemed to have missed. Lockjaw. We all get the vaccination, seems like a horrible way to go. Tetanus... must be common in the soils and dirt.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetanus

I might also include a wound infection system to disable players. Maybe even animal bites will make it take forever to recover from wounds. If we expand on this 'disease' it would give good grounds to expand on a 'healer' profession to focus on cleaning up wounds and aid recovery. Then we'll need someone to share their medical expertise.

I remember in the 90's a doctor refused to address my question about wound treatments. His hippocratic oath meant that he could not encourage a youth to play a 'killing game'. Thats what we pen paper rpgers are, sick twisted people obsessed with killing.

Weird. I wonder what part of the Hippocratic Oath he was thinking of? There's nothing in there about not sharing information about how the body or medical science works. Did you ask him something creepy like "where would I need to stab somebody to make sure they wouldn't recover?"

Cheers,

-Kyle

Nah, I think my question was what happens in surgery when someone has a cut artery. Perhaps he didn't know since he was a GP and not a surgeon. But he asked me if it was a 'killing game', and then declined to answer. Good ol' doctor, manage to speak with him on the phone 2 years ago.

If someone is injured severely, but with some other light (1-2HP) wounds, could a Greater Healing or similar be directed at the injury - maybe stop a severed hand from spraying everywhere to prevent shock until Miracle Cure is available (can it regrow limbs? I can't remember.), while ignoring the lighter flesh wounds or scratches.

Do you think this could be practical?

I think it could work. Seems it does heal arteries and general bleeding. I suppose miracle cure would work sometime after damage and decay.

Did we hae an entry for gangrene? Best amputate. Must'e been so common before antibiotics.
