No. I did try a few months back to contact the admins, to no avail. However, I did contact the Wikifoundry admins to get myself added as an administrator so I could take a backup of the pages. Sadly, the backup doesn't preserve the metadata (conversations, version history, owners, formatting, attached files, etc.), so it would take a bit of work to restore the relationships within the content. Plus, the copyright to the pages belongs to the individuals that wrote them, which I would now struggle to check.

That said, the whole Wikifoundry site is giving a 503 error, not just our wiki, so it's possible that once they've sorted out their issues, our wiki will return with it.

One to keep an eye on - thanks for the heads-up.

Just looked and there have been no updates since early 2017, so my backup is still up to date (albeit without the metadata). I guess this does raise the spectre of how vulnerable this site is and I'll have a think about how we can preserve the content. Any ideas?

Its all text. Can't we just cut and paste everything?

There are images, Kharile, and tables, etc. Plus there's the metadata and copyright to consider, too. I'd be happy to live without comments and previous versions of pages, but "author" would be absolutely key to retain.

What I might do is make the Wiki read only, use the backup I've got to start manually appending key metadata (such as author), and comparing the HTML in my backup with the pages displayed on the Wiki to see if there's anything else missing, plus I can build the page hierarchy.

That'd be the easy bit, tho...

Hm... one possible trick is to use the highest resolution you can and do screen captures. Doesn't mean you can manipulate the text but I sometimes use screen captures and paste them onto excel. Might be an option, short term solution.

I can use a product like HTtrack to capture the website content and use that offline copy to interrogate the metadata to associate it with the backup I have. But that doesn't really solve the copyright problem of then being able to do anything with all that stuff.

You're thinking that the host site might have some legal claim to our work? I hope not.

'R J Lambert' was the creator, but passed the reins on to someone else after a wee while.
