Greetings!

I'm curious if anyone knows why, within the DW rulebook, the metric system was used for measuring things at a tactical scale while miles (and not kilometers) were used for larger distances.

Thanks!

I read somewhere a comment from Dave Morris saying that his use of the metric system in DW is probably down to his training as a physicist.

I don't know about the Imperial measurements for larger distances... Maybe that was the influence of others?

The UK is a hodge-podge of Imperial and Metric systems so it's never felt odd to me that the measures in Dragon Warriors are similarly mixed - pints and miles sit comfortably besides metres and kilograms. Well, they used to, but we've recently been taken over by the blue passport brigade that would have us going back to measuring things in rods, chains, and grains. Makes me sad to think of what their shaftment has done to our once-respected yard lands.

Yes, folks, biting political satire mixed with side-splittingly hilarious medieval-units-of-measurement puns - can any other forum boast of such things?

I'm a very ardent SI-system advocate, but:

The imperial system has one and only one distinct advantage over metric. Specifically, the names of the measurements are much better to the ear (to an English speaker, at least). Yard, foot, inch, mile, pound, ounce etc just have a nicer and more satisfying sound than metre, centimetre, kilogram and so on.

Maybe Dave was using the better sounding (and more old-timey) measurements everywhere for the sake of flavour and atmosphere, except where it was a practical impediment, namely in tactical situations.

Cheers,

-Kyle
