Simon is not new to the presence of nobility, as they sometimes attend the library, although never to speak to Simon, so he's a little flustered as he bows briefly before saying to the Earl:
"Your Grace, I am Simon of Willowmere, scribe at the library here in Ongus, and my apologies for my drawn blade."
Simon is a little confused about what to do with his sword - he is conscious that he shouldn't have a drawn weapon in the presence of the Earl, but doesn't have a scabbard for it, nor is he entirely sure he could even let go of the hilt if he tried. He looks embarrassed and tries to hold it behind his back, tip down, and takes a step away from the Earl. A little overwhelmed not just by the presence of the Earl, but so many other distinguished nobles, Simon is further taken aback by Berenice's words, particularly fixating on the word "won't" - does she mean to suggest that the sword could hurt him but chooses not to?
