Well actually... his high Reflexes gives him great bonuses to DEFENCE and EVASION and he's pretty smart so he seems like a survivor
I'm not scared of dying at Rank 1, it'll make for a good story :p

Hey @Joshua I'm thinking, my character was nicknamed "Lucky" because he was popular with the ladies before all his bits rotted off. Now that he's an ugly plague survivor, "Lucky" probably has a whole new meaning to him. I reckon you're the only person he still lets call him "Lucky" these days.

Yeah thinking about it all i reckon sten will call you Maitland in front of others keeping Lucky as a private thing also stops others asking questions.
Sten is a really generous guy but has returned from the crusades a bit disheartened and questioning the true faith real purpose after witnessing some of the atrocities done in Gods name.

Hahaha so I thought about it a little more and... do you mind if I completely change my mind? Playing a depressed grump doesn't seem so much fun to me, so I thought of something more like this. Let me know if it works for you:

Maitland arrived in the Principalities all fired up ready for the crusades, but caught plague before even seeing any action. After he recovered Sten found him begging on the street and, recognising a fellow Albioner and perhaps wanting to do some good after the atrocities he witnessed (your call), befriended and helped get him back on his feet. They went on a couple adventures together, scavenged Maitland the weapons & armour he now carries, and reminded him that there was still something he could live for - treasure and adventure!

With this interpretation I'd say Maitland likes to call himself Lucky as something of a joke, a way of making light of his condition, something he may have learned from Sten.
What do you think?

I reckon Maitland probably went to the Crusades out of a sense of responsibility to God but has also had his faith shaken thanks to his bad luck - so with the same kind of feelings about it as Sten, but for completely different reasons.

Hey @simonbarns I thought I'd move all my other random rolling and character generation chat here so I don't completely fill up the character-gen channel. At the moment I'm still tossing up between Knight or Barbarian, but I'm pretty happy with my stats.

What do you think of this as a backstory - I really was a dashing rascal, a freeman and son of preeminent carpenter. We had a decent amount of money, I was well known, confident, full of myself, and a royal pain in the ass to my father, always getting up to mischief with the local lads and ladies.

Maybe I knocked up someone I shouldn't have - daughter of one of the local lords (perhaps a neice of Baron Aldred's?) and basically went on crusade to escape my responsibilities. I like the idea that me and the lady actually did have real feelings for each other, because I like the idea that I might meet her again during the game.

Freemen owe their lord 40 days in their army each year, so I learned my way around a sword, and my (relatively) wealthy father passed down his suit of plate to me. And off I went, full of bravado and confidence!

Long story short, the crusades were hot and dusty, maybe I got jaded, but I caught an exotic illness that wasted me away. My nose, a couple toes and a finger fell off before I was well, and maybe half my face is paralysed, and I'm covered with boil scars. They sent me home on a ship expecting me not to make it and I miraculously recovered - but when I was near home I chickened out, too ashamed of who I was and how I looked, and took to the open road instead.
Haha well I basically wrote you a novel. Let me know what you think, I'm open to changing whatever!

Oh @simonbarns there were a couple other things I wanted to lock in with you before we started. I mentioned knocking up someone I shouldn't have, perhaps the neice of a lord - do you have any suggestions of who this might be?

I also thought it might be fun to actually hail from the fief of Earl Montombre. I'm in Aldred's lands because I'm too ashamed of my appearance to be able to stand going back home, but all I know of Aldred are the dirty rumours that get circulated in Montombre's place
