Betala thinks for a moment about questioning either Arkyns eyesight or his knowledge of biology but settles for lowering him down. Then retrieving the rope and descending herself.

The three latterly descended Heroes find themselves at the bottom of a dried up well. The walls are caked with dried mud and the ground underfoot is squelchy and muddy. A passageway leads to the north where Swan is stood ten feet down it. She holds her lantern ahead of her in one hand, her sword in the other.

Arkyn also lights his lantern and heads down the tunnel to join Swan.

'Do you think there will be monsters behind this door? Guarding their treasure?' he asks.

Betala takes up the rear, watching the dirt and tunnel walls for signs of danger.....

Drawing his own sword and hoping that Arryn’s words were not prophetic, Taradoc moves with his new companions down the passageway toward the door.

A door? The young river man turned adventurer hadn’t expected to see one of those down here!

Swan looks back as the others make their way down one by one, noting Betala's nimble way with the rope. Another sea-lass? Well that's good!

"Good of you all to join me, now that you know there isn't a devil or some other beast lurking at the bottom of the shaft!" She grins as she speaks, to show she doesn't mean it, then moves off down the passageway to the door.

When she reaches the closed portal she pauses, carefully lowering the lantern to the filthy floor, trying hard to make no noise that would give her away to someone on the other side. Then she presses her right ear to the damp wood, closing her eyes to shut off any distractions, and concentrates, trying to hear something of what might be beyond it.

Her ear pressed to the cold door, Swan listens. No noise can be heard through the thick solid door.

> And there I leave you. Back in ten days. Keep listening.

Swan takes her ear away from the door. They had heard not a dickie-bird but then...

Slight and faint - this is a very thick wooden door, inexplicably wearing a hat, and then.... Tweet... Pause .. Tweet...

Birdsong? This far underground?
