I know Kieren was planning on doing so ( increasing his forum and social media presence) but RL seems to have been kicking his arse a little too much for him to make much headway.

This kind of thing bothers me. Are SK within their legal right to enforce their IP super strictly? Yes. But its dumb. I think keeping a casual and permissive relationship with your fanbase is much more likely to engender loyalty and respect than the reverse.

Let me be clear here - as I'm the one who said "That's key - to do anything on that type of scale or the scale of Cadaver Draconis you really do need permission or you can't be surprised if you are hit with a cease-and-desist by the licence owners" - it's wound up credited to Cobwebbed Dragon in the reply, but I said it, and so I want to clarify what I meant by saying that.

My point was that the fan policy specifically allows us to do it. It gives us the permission we need. The way you've responded here makes me think you may have thought I was saying the exact opposite. I was pointing out that - in my opinion at least - the fan policy is a very good thing, that makes it clear that we can produce material, albeit as long as we don't charge for it.

I can understand that some people might prefer a policy that did allow people to charge (and I certainly wouldn't object to that if it happened) but Serpent King is actually taking a much more lenient approach than many, many companies involved with roleplaying games do.

As an aside, keeping a visible presence on the sites frequented by the fans is also just good business, apart from anything else (and not something that requires a massive investment in time either). Users don't want to think that the only time they're ever going to hear from the copyright owners is when they're being told to take down their fan supplement or whatever.

I couldn't agree more - being active online on social media, forums, blogs, etc., and managing your contacts lists (all the e-mails harvested through DriveThruRPG and those that have signed up to the SKG website blog) is key to raising the profile of your products. Just blogging once a fortnight, updating social media status once a week-or-so, a monthly Instagram photo from their library of artwork, quarterly DriveThruRPG promotion on one product or other, the occasional contribution to this forum, etc., doesn't take as much time as it sounds - especially if you invited guest bloggers to contribute anecdotes from their Dragon Warriors games, or profile a DW player, or something. Even if SKG did something brazenly exploitative like run an errata competition to improve the quality of the products, it at least shows the world that Dragon Warriors is active.

I remember back when I started making game aids available from the Cobwebbed Forest, I received some feedback that maybe the content was 'too helpful' and I should let SKG know what I was doing. Despite attempting to strike up an e-mail conversation on a few occasions, the closest I got to a response to any of my mails was a 'thanks, but we're too busy to look at it', so I think we'd probably be quite safe regardless of what we decided to make available.
