Honestly, I was so excited about the PG as I thought it was also going to bring the Knight and Barbarian into line with the later classes (more skills/progression options). Was this never the case? Did I imagine it? Or was it dropped for some reason? I only ask it has actually stopped me from buying the book, so I just wanted to see what happened regarding this.

Cheers.

Hi,

When the Players Guide was first in development it was under the 'leadership' of James Wallis at Magnum Opus Press. When he decided to withdraw from involvement in Dragon Warriors, it came under different direction from the new licence holders Serpent King. And the direction of the book changed.

Why? I can only guess at that - it may have been that it wasn't necessarily clear enough what James had planned for that to be taken to completion by other people. From a personal perspective as one of the writer's, I also wonder if the amount of playtesting necessary to make it work would have been possible with the small number of playtesters available. But I think it was mostly that the leadership changed and the vision changed.

The good news is that a large part of what was planned in terms of the original incarnation of the Guide is now available in Cadaver Draconis. I can't say what James would have done to bring it all together, and I think there are probably some balance issues there because of the limited amount of playtesting - but it is around. Cadaver Draconis does assume that people have the Players Guide but is probably reasonably useable without it.

There are some additional skills for Knights and Barbarians in the PG....only one or two pages. But they are there.

Ah, found it. Pg. 116 after Guards and Secondary Skills.

If you want more goodies please to give CD a look over.

I think the additional skills for knights and barbarians coupled with the secondary skills deal adequately with the gap. The paths in CD are very unbalanced and make radical changes where only a subtle one was needed.

I would have liked to have seen a few extra skills for them to pick from but the method used is sound.

Cheers,

May I ask what these are? Also, does the Knight only start getting them at rank 8 upwards or a little more granular? How about the Barbarian skills?

I didn't see this listed in ToC at all, or maybe I missed it. :(

Some more skills and maybe a more granular way of those two classes getting them. Basically like the other classes received that were introduced as the original books came out. Hope that makes sense.

It is in the ToC - 'The Supremacy of the Sword' but wrongly stated as being on page 119, when it's in fact on 117.

I won't give too much detail for obvious reasons, but there are six skills and both Knights and Barbarians can take one at 3rd rank and one at 6th. Their names are 'Fearless', 'Intimidating', 'Iron Will', 'Tireless', 'True Grit', and 'Oak Fists'.

What's more, if you generate an NPC Knight using my online character generator, the generated character will now include these skills.

Yes, this is a shameless plug for my site, for which I am entirely unapologetic :geek:.

I think that this is a good addition, indeed, though Oak Fist is renamed to Artful Grip as far as I am concerned.
(I also happen to suspect that most Referees aren't doing enough with the social advantages of the two core classes, probably because of a belief everyone should have equal chances in the social arena, though I might well be wrong). Of course, I also tend to give both core Professions an edge about recovering from surprise at first level, so the issue of balanced core and non core Professions has never come up.

Keep in mind that I am not, generally speaking, a big believer in balance of different Professions. I just happen to believe that if anyone is to be stronger, these should be the core Professions. But in general, I use Cadaver Draconis without a second thought.

Hey, the Cobwebbed Forest is your site? Cool! You deserve congratulations!
It's been really useful in preparing for my latest Legend games.
