Seeing there is a reasonable level of activity here right now, I'd like to begin the process of trying to 'fix' whatever people think is broken in Cadaver Draconis.

Cadaver Draconis is largely based on material that was originally being written for the Players Book under James Wallis' leadership. When James ceased to be involved in Dragon Warriors the book was taken in a different direction. As one of those who was inside the process of writing the Players Book one problem I saw with the original approach was the fact that we would never be able to playtest it fully. We just did not have access to enough playtesters because of the relatively small number of Dragon Warriors players. We could not test everything for balance. When we got around to editing the left over material for Cadaver Draconis we did make some adjustments to some very obvious problems but we really didn't have time to crunch numbers and balance things perfectly.

Now, it's all out there, and everybody can see it, let's see if we can work with what was done in Cadaver Draconis to 'fix' what was done. Let's go through it one path at a time.

Speak up - say what you want to about the path. About how you think it can be improved, both individually and as part of a whole.

Let's work towards a second edition of Cadaver Draconis - we've already got some cover art for it :)

Can't hurt to have a few threads going at once, so lets have a look at the Chieftain.

There are 40 paths in CD and if we have 1 thread per path then this is going to swamp this discussion forum with low-traffic threads. I propose that we create a separate forum for discussing Cadaver Draconis content and move these existing threads to it. Thoughts?

In the absence of any strong objections in the next couple of days, I'll see if I can flex some of those administrative privileges I've acquired.

The impression I get is that people aren't playing these paths to have an opinion on them - they're novel curiosities. I might co-opt some of the skills into my game, but I wouldn't take a whole path (or the path mechanic). I'd be interested to know how other people have adopted this content - do people play with paths? Do they just use the content for inspiration for the NPCs? Do they pick-and-choose some of the individual skills for their games? Or are paths of only academic interest?

Maybe I should start a thread (or a poll :))

I'm inclined to agree. I wonder how practical it would be to set up a Play by Forum game of some kind that we can use to test underused professions. Selfishly I'd like to put my Archer profession through its paces, as I have no game going and can't playtest it "in the wild".

It's the same challenge that Shaun said faced the paths and contributed to why they were dropped from the Players' Guide. If you've got 40 new professions to play-test and want to play them at 3 different experience ranges (novice (1-3 rank), experienced (4-7), and heroic (8+)), you need a large community of active players (and a large stable of different adventures). I have the same difficulty play-testing my own rules/professions and at least I'm able to run a campaigns every year with my group (but it's still slow-going).

I'd be up for a play-by-forum game if there's interest, but as I have no experience of these things I have no idea how they work in practice (I'm used to conversational play across a table from the other players - I'm not sure how that works when the players are all posting at different times in different time zones). If you are only able to play 1 'turn' every 24-48 hours, I can't imagine how combat and exploration would work unless it adopted more of a narrative, rather than mechanical, style (which kind of renders moot the mechanical proving of a profession). Has anyone done this effectively in a forum?

I was a player in an online GURPS campaign for ages (with players in Hungary and Adelaide) and that was pretty fun, but it required a lot of work from the GM and a lot of commitment from the players. It was Skype and Maptools based, rather than PBF, and even that took about three times longer to work through the campaign than it would have face-to-face.

Maybe we could create a nano-adventure (about one page worth) to test the practicality of the Play by Forum process. I guess we'd have to work out how to actually run a Play by Forum game though. Does anybody have any experience with them?
