You know, I got a vagure recollection of adnd talking about experience points associated with gold gains. I'm just curious but there is a major aspect of rpgs which I've never seen in any system that I'm familiar with, which only goes back to early 90s, but forget money, forget relations with powerful people, why don't players do stuff for looks 16+ hot chicks? I think in pendragon I think there was some elements there, and there are computer games where this is a very important aspect of the ultimate points system. Now, I think its awkward to sell a rpg supplement with rewards for rodgering the looks 18 princess before she gets married to Hardrics son in law but I figure that is more impressive as an accomplishment than destroying an orc chieftain and his followers. Can we somehow incentivize players to make greater 'conquests' by modifying the experience point system? If Clothilda was a looks 16 chick before ned ran off with her, would you still need payment? Surely some players have personal goals, desires to keep order in society? I wouldn't give a numerical figure for 'altruism' but perhaps its the basis for a whole book 3 adventure campaign? |

You know. Sometimes I do worry about you. I think most of us give XP for social wins as much as we do for combat wins or success against adversity, I guess codifying it couldn't hurt but I find it easier just to eyeball stuff. |

On the solvents right now. BUt hey, I figure we need to drive players to go for other rewards, not measured by crowns... just like in the movies. Hard to introduce into pen paper rpgs but we should since there are 'rewards' with these 'accomplishments' and 'conquests'.. |

Quote: I think in pendragon I think there was some elements there Pendragon characters gain points of 'glory'. Glory can be gained through combat or through social interaction. One of the interesting facets is that extra Glory can be awarded depending on who witnesses the act - e.g. successfully reciting an epic lay will gain more Glory if done at the High King's court than in a local lord's manor. (Skills, including combat skills, can also be increased through 'skill checks' gained as the result of exceptional use of those skills.) Pendragon doesn't use XP - which is a departure from most RPGs (including Dragon Warriors). Dragon Warriors includes the concept of 'Renown' in the new rulebook (pg. 131), but this is simply linked to Rank rather than deeds. I'm sure this could be elaborated if someone wanted to - but it would be a significant change to the game. (Personally I don't quantify 'glory' or 'renown' in my games - instead keeping a note of characters' actions in a given region. After all, deeds that may have made them heroes in the western lands of Baron Aldred's fief might not even have been heard of in Ongus... Until some well-traveled knight/priest/lord mentions it - giving the characters a little boost to their status.) Quote: why don't players do stuff for looks 16+ hot chicks? That's probably down to good/bad role-playing. I have been in a game where a player was consistently playing a very lusty knight character - few women would be safe from his attentions.* One day, when adventuring in a deep forest, he chanced upon a group of very attractive maidens dancing in a circle in a clearing... The player immediately suspected some faerie mischief and said his character would simply ride on by. The GM, having noted all his previous (sometimes reckless) actions in respect of the opposite sex was having none of it and made him roll against his 'Lustful' trait...** * Yes, not the most PC game - but probably appropriate to the era the game was set in. ** Obviously not a DW game. I know Dave Morris has said he doesn't like the 'character traits' set out in Pendragon, but I've found them to be very useful indeed - usually more as a guide when uncertain how a character or npc might act but also, very occasionally, in situations like these where a player is using his own knowledge rather than what his character might know. |

Reminds me of this conversation: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=354 It's up to the player to decide on their motivation for their characters' actions and the GM also needs to bear in mind that XP is a reward for the player as much as it is the character. |
