I'd like to discuss this ... what happens when half my knight's armour is stolen overnight? How do I mix and match mail?

Over to you.

I'd suggest one of two ways of approaching this.

Firstly, increase the complexity of combat by introducing Hit Locations, then you have whatever AF you have for the piece of armour you have at that location.

Secondly, just arbitrarily decide that an incomplete (or damaged) suit of armour has a reduced AF. The armour bypass roll then indicates that you struck an area with reduced or damaged armour and narrate the effects.

A hybrid option of the two is also available. Any advances on those two approaches?

I advocate for keeping as much simplicity as possible, and keeping it abstract.

From that, you can probably guess my preference, but other views apply.

Who has used or does use hit location - I remember playing Top Secret SI, and we'd often call out things like 'Ooof. I've just been shot in the 2.'

What about good old fashioned aimed shots?

I have a combat manoeuvre in my game called "Called Shot", which is basically resolved by applying a penalty to Attack that, if you hit, means you automatically bypass armour. Can be applied to melee or missile attacks.

In the Mungoda Gold adventure it gives some rules for 'stripping down' armour to accomodate the climate. In simple terms the AF is reduced accordingly. I'd do something similar - detrmine what % of the armour is missing, and reduce the overall AF by a comparable amount.

If you have half your armour stolen go with book six but if you try to build it up eg has ringmail finds plate leg and arm grieves i would average the 2 so AF4

The option for location is possible i would probably use the following 1d10 1 head 2-4 torso 5 left arm 6 right arm 7-8 left leg 9-10 right leg.

We have used called shots before attacker takes a -4 to attack if it hits then defender gets a ref check to dodge. A hit to the head would do double weapon damage.
