Just thought I might throw this out here. I do have some favourites for Charlton Heston and other old movies. Thought someone might have a suggestion for their favourite movie that might put us in the fantasy rpg mood.

El Cid
Kingdom of Heaven
Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer

I'm happy to consider others. Maybe someone might want to recommend seven samurai or anything. Maybe even one of those sword and sandals movies.

Off the top of my head...

Dragonslayer
The Sword & the Sorcerer (ok, well maybe slightly more action oriented DW!)
First Knight
Wolfhound

There are a bunch of non-fantasy ones that are also pretty good for just setting tone:
Ironclad
Robin Hood (The Patrick Bergman one)
Black Death
13th Warrior

Wolfhound, that’s interesting. Not all are fantasy, El Cid with Charleton Heston did a great job portraying a Knight who has to keep taking crap. Maybe that’s not the main theme but it was one aspect of his story.

John Boorman's "Excalibur" is one of the better Arthurian films (IMO).

For those who want to set a campaign in the isles of Thuland or in Mercania, you might want to watch:
"Beowulf and Grendel" (2005, dir Sturla Gunnarsson) - good setting; right armour, weapons and horses for the period.

In the same vein, the frankly mis-named "The Viking Sagas" (1995, dir Michael Chapman) has some excellent scenes and settings. The lead actor was the big German in "Gladiator"...

Ah, forgot about that Beowulf one - good call. The (historically accurate) ponies are funny in that one - imagine trying to sell that to a Knight or Barbarian.

"So this is a Warhorse, eh? It's a bit on the small side..."

"Mini-warhorse Sir! All the rage nowadays. Very economical."

It explains how some Norsemen were said to be so tall they were too big to ride a horse... ;)

For a slightly less serious Mercanian campaign I would suggest " Norsemen ( Vikingane )" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsemen_(TV_series)

Movies I've used as visual references and for ideas:

Útlaginn.
The Message.
Black Death.
Ladyhawke ( Not accurate at all but its been one of my favourite movies for decades.....just needs a better soundtrack....)
1066.
Viy.
The Eagle.
Legend ( Tim Curry owns this movie....and almost makes up for Tom Cruise....almost...)
Ofelas.
The Pillars of the Earth.

Season of the Witch - This movie seemed to me to be just like a DW adventure. (It stars Nicholas Cage, be warned.) From imdb:

A 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth who can only dream of becoming a knight join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl. When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardises the knight's pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.
