Having met on the road, you have decided to travel together. Night is falling as you reach a small village.

This is a small village, and there is no inn to stay at. Perhaps a kind villager would give you lodging in their hut, should you offer them a few copper pennies.

Why hello gentlemen, I am Mathias Critonnen, devourer of mutton and flexor of triceps. I hail from the lands up north, but none of you have likely heard of it. I walk the lands to challenge those worthy to a duel. My city is empty of anyone who can entertain me, so I must continue to search.

"That's as maybe, lad" coughs Old Odo, who has kindly taken you in for the night. "But by me reckoning, there's nothing as tasty as a good, solid, stick-to-your ribs, eel pie.

"It's healthy as well. You'd not know it to look at me now, but in me youth, well, let's say, that I were in perfect health. And them eels, well, they must have played a part in that. I say that there be nothing as good as eel pie to give you some pep..

"But here we are tonight, and the mutton smells good, so we'll be eating well. The tales I could tell you of me eel-hunting days, though. That big old bastard I caught up the Bogwater River..."

He tails off as he goes over and gives the mutton stew a stir. It does smell good..

I'd love to try eel but I do love a good mutton stew. Ohh the smell brings back memories...
What do you do to make a living if I may ask? There don't seem to be many "opportunities" in these parts as far as I can tell.

"I rents me spare room to them such as you who pass. There's always need for a hot dinner and a warm fire. Aparts from that, me family passes by, and no-one begrudges some kindling or logs for me fire."

Sir Alfred chuckled at the old mans story. In truth there was little more to his own familys properties than the small collection of dwellings they stood in.

" Mathias, I will answer your challenge if you wish. I was too young to join my brothers in the Crusades but I have drawn my blade once or twice to drive off robber knights and brigands."

" Does sparring with the flat of the blade suit you?"

"Hoo-hoo" chortles Odo in excitement. "Sparrin', why I've not seen such a thing in maybe a three-day. There was this great red-bearded fella that stayed here last. Him and his friend were always about a bit of sparrin'. Poor feller, his friend, he had the sort of face only a mother could love, if you get me drift?

"If I was ten years younger mind, I'd be testing me mettle against yez."

Mathias smirks and picks up his axe, looking at his reflection in the blade.
"I don't know if we could call it sparring with the two of us; but yes, why don't I play around with you a little, work up an apetite".

Wilfred speaks.
“I may not be as mighty as you, sir, or as fancy as you, Sir Knight, but I’d welcome the chance to work up an appetite before we eat. I think it might be best if we just go at it with sticks, though. I’m not so sure that I can hold back my morning star in sparring.”

Sir Alfred chuckled, " With sticks? Well...twas not that long ago I was a boy that I've forgotten."

He seized up three stout branches and stripped them of twigs and leaves passing them about to the others.

" Now defend yerselves!"

He charged at Mathias with a grin.

Stick: 1d20 1 Crit!

Shield: Shield: 1d6 3
